Alex Waterhouse-Hayward June 28th

So you think that after taking a course where you have mastered the controls of your digital camera you are now up and running to be a good photographer? Wrong. You have to learn to light. The secret for developing a strong personal style comes from knowing how to light. With the proliferation of digital cameras and digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLRs) more and more of the photographs taken look much the same. In order to put one’s stamp on a picture, the approach, particularly in portrait work, has to be the lighting. Lighting does not need to be complicated. But it must swing away from the camera’s pop-up flash if any difference is to be noticed. In my commercial work, at least 90% of it I light with one light unit. With one light I am able to darken, lighten my background and separate my subject from it. I can inject mystery or humour. That single light can be glamorous or it can be clinical. Our course will explore all the possibilities of one light, mainly a 3x4 ft soft box. We will also explore larger soft boxes, spotlights and outdoor lighting with the mixing of one light with artificial light. Students will learn to observe, control and measure light and gain confidence in a simple but effective studio situation. The studio, with the one light can be indoors or outdoors.
