Intermediate Photography Course Outline
Prerequisite:  Basic Photography or equivalent

This course builds on the fundamentals learned in Basic Photography and the Basic Digital SLR course. Students are encouraged to incorporate their technical skills with creative visual expression. Emphasis is placed on the use of lighting, exposure, film choice and composition to create technically correct and aesthetic images. Students gain practical experience through shooting sessions with models, and are introduced to a variety of studio techniques for still-life and portraiture; a challenging and worthwhile course for advancing one’s skill level.
*Field Trips may occur outside scheduled class time.

 

Night Photography Course Outline
Prerequisite: Basic Photography or equivalent
Hours/Costs: 24hrs. 8 sessions $290

Students will learn to have fun with the camera outdoors in the evening. Exposure times will vary between 1 second and up to 20 minutes. Subject matter will be outdoor portraiture, night scene, landscapes, parks, beaches, golf courses, cars, still life set-ups, street scenes using street light exposures+ flash and flashlights and models. This technique is very versatile and a lot of fun and can be applied to fine art, editorial, advertising, fashion, the music industry, stock, landscape and architectural.
*Film and digital are welcome. A tripod is required.

 

Composition & Critique Course Outline

Photography is an exciting way of seeing / sharing our vision with the world. This workshop will support you in recognizing and developing your own unique stylistic vision as a photographer. Compositional exercises & workshops will give you a better understanding of how the human mind reads imagery while regular critiques of your work will develop the confidence needed when presenting your work to future clients.
This workshop takes on a fine art approach but is still highly relevant to stylistically driven commercial photography.
*Please note that the week 9 class field trip will take place June 12th.


Photographic Art History Course Outline

A solid knowledge of the history and development of photography is necessary for anybody seriously interested in this creative field. This unique opportunity for the beginners and advanced students alike offers a well rounded and in-depth overview of the history of photography. Within the scope of fun, informative and visual lectures the participants will explore the art movements and works of photographers who changed and shaped photography from its beginnings into the present times. Students will be encouraged to do their own research according to their personal interests and actively participate in the classroom discussions and forums.
*This is a lecture based course.

 

Creative Photography: Photographic Explorations Course Outline

Discovering Style Course Outline

All great photographers have a unique photographic style and you have it too. Through lectures, field trips, shooting assignments and group critiques; this course is designed for you to discover, define and refine your own visual signature.

The Natural Portrait Course Outline
Prerequisite: Basic Photography or the equivalent

This course is a combination of a studio and outdoor photography to demonstrate various techniques in portraiture using simple yet effective techniques to improve portraiture skills. Students will learn the basic principles of studio lighting for portraits and also tips and techniques for outdoors. At the end of the course each student will present his/her portfolio of various portraits taken in different light settings (color or B&W).

 

Natural Lighting Course Outline

Learn how to examine natural light and use it to your advantage. Capture dynamic images in all types of weather conditions. Students will have the opportunity to photograph a variety of people and places, using natural light, on various field trips. Through lectures and practical assignments, in-depth studies will cover the importance of: pre-scouting and location, equipment, film type, clothing, the “sweet light,” and preparation. Students will come to understand the importance of light and its effect on each composition. Lighting is key to a great image.

Travel Photography Course Outline
Prerequisite: Basic Photography or equivalent

Travel is one of the great themes of photography, a never ending quest to explore, to see the world, and show it in pictures. Through field trips, lectures and class discussion, this course will teach you how to capture in photographs, the people, places and experiences of your travels, for your enjoyment and to share with others.
*Field Trips may occur outside scheduled class time.

 

Travel Photography: The Vancouver Guidebook Course Outline
Prerequisite: Basic Photography or equivalent
Hours/Cost: 30 hrs. 10 sessions $400

This workshop features a series of field trips around unique Vancouver locations; the type that would be featured in a city guidebook i.e. dining, shopping, summer events and tourist attractions. The course will also have creative editorial assignments for each student, interspersed with lectured examples and critique sessions. As a final class project, students will create a final layout for a digital self published book; a photographic guidebook to Vancouver, that would be a great portfolio piece for any aspiring photographer.
*Every student will receive a copy of the final book, which will cost, approximately, an additional $40.

 

Streets & Your Photography Course Outline
Prerequisite: Basic Photography or equivalent
Hours/Costs: 30hrs. 10 sessions $335

Streets have been the elemental and most vivid experience in photography since its beginning. This course is an introduction to the genre of street photography and in-depth review for those who already started on their own. In the perfect balance of practice (field trips) and theory (lectures) the students will be encouraged to develop their own unique style as well as a large individual project of their choice, which would lead to building of their professional portfolio.
